Wood carving power tools make carving and sculpting easy. Most of the power carving tools mount to an angle grinder. Angle grinders provide plenty of oomph and, with their side-mount handles, plenty of control.

Router bit tearout is a nasty problem when you’re cutting dovetails. Drums , discs, and other sanding tools http://www.greenchip.co.kr/all-artificial-flowers/ serve for both shaping and finishing. Many carvers blend contours using a foam-cushioned sanding drum.

Patience is the key to avoid mistakes and just keep on learning from them when power wood carving. One end of the shank is inserted in the rotary power carver. The head of the bit is formed around the opposite end of the shank. The most common shank diameters are ¼”, 1/8″, 3/32″, and 1/16″. Flexible shaft machines accept any of these diameters when equipped with the appropriate collet. Micro motors typically accept 1/8″- and 3/32″-diameter shanks, although, optional collets can be purchased for alternate size shanks.

Other than that the tool and all it’s attachments work very well during operation. Cylinder and tapered shapes are best for heavy wood shaping and are the basic bits for that job at a half and/or 3/4 inch diameter (1/4 shaft, of course). Carbides and steel bits are excellent at giving that smooth finish similar to carving with a gouge. Even though rotary tools are fully capable of shredding more material types than just wood, I’m going to be focusing on what the best burr bits for wood carving are.
I have a couple of blogs and videos on sanding and finishing. So feel free to check those out here, here, and here. Once you’ve shaped the bird, change to a 120-grit sanding sleeve. Blend the contours, and remove deeper scratches left by the coarser drum. Hand-sand the bird with 150- and 220-grit sandpaper, going with the grain.
But angle grinders spinning carbide bits at 20k RPM are no joke. The wood bits can come off in a hurry, so get those peepers protected. The idea is that gloves can get caught in a rotating machine and pull you into it. That said, I don’t see these discs as a high risk for that. There is a pretty significant risk of having the disc burn a hole in your hand rather quickly though. I have grazed the disc with my hand and it burned partially through the glove before.
